Yes it is a legal requirement for Front & Back registration plates.
$60USD fine for failing to do so for either one , Might revoke your license if you do not have either.

Hot day today in NY. Took. A ride to Bayville, small beach town on Long Islands North Shore. Across the bay you can see Connecticut. Didn't know which pics to post so I'll post all.
