Rusting frame numbers

Two or three weeks ago I spotted an H2 in Bury St Edmonds (only the second one Iíve seen on the road in over three years ) I had a really good look over it and noticed the frame numbers were rusting where they are stamped through the paint into the metal (2016 grey frame)
My 2015 had its 2nd MOT test today and I also noticed my numbers have lost their bright silver colour and were also showing a slight hint of rust colour , my H2 does not get used in the rain and still looks brand new so I just put some light oil on my finger and rubbed the frame number to stop it getting "under the headstock paint " and possibly causing an issue at a later date .
